Politkovskaya Trial to Resume

The Moscow Times
The trial of three men charged in the 2006 murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya is to resume Tuesday amid controversy over the judge's decision to close it to the public, a lawyer for Politkovskaya's family said.

Judge Yevgeny Zubov of the Moscow Military District Court had scheduled the next hearing for Dec. 1. But lawyer Anna Stavitskaya said Monday that she was notified that it had been rescheduled for Tuesday. The court did not explain why, she said.

Zubov last week ruled the trial would be open to the public but reversed his decision two days later, saying jurors feared for their safety if the media were allowed in the courtroom. One of the jurors, however, contacted Ekho Moskvy radio and said he and fellow jurors were not against the press' presence. The Supreme Court said last week that it would examine the basis for Zubov's decision to hold the trial behind closed doors.
