Pension Reform Passes

ROME () -- Italy's government won a vote of confidence Wednesday in the Chamber of Deputies on controversial cost-cutting pension reforms in the 1995 budget.

The lower house voted 346 to 208 in favor of the government, Speaker Irene Pivetti announced. Another vote on a second aspect of pension reforms was expected later. Such votes mean legislation is automatically passed.

The government imposed the confidence motion to force through reform of the pension system, which forms a key part of the 1995 budget package. It had survived an earlier confidence vote Monday on another crucial part of the budget, an amnesty on illegal building.
