Penn State Fills No. 1 As Gators Dethroned

NEW YORK -- Penn State rose to the top spot in the college polls for the first time since January 1987, on a weekend when Florida lost its No. 1 ranking and Notre Dame dropped out of the Top 25 for the first time since 1986.

Sixth-ranked Auburn sent Florida to its first loss of the year and first at home in 18 games, 36-33, in front of a record crowd of 85,562. The seesaw game featured six lead changes, four in the fourth quarter. The Tigers won when Frank Sanders leaped between two defenders to catch an 8-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Nix with 30 seconds left.

After the win -- the team's 18th straight -- coach Bobby Bowden made the case that being ineligible for a bowl should not keep the team from a national championship. "This was our Super Bowl,'' said Bowden, unbeaten in two seasons at Auburn. "To me, this makes us No. 1.''

In other games Saturday:

No. 3 Penn State 31, No. 5 Michigan 24. Penn State moved into the No. 1 spot from No. 3 with a 31-24 victory at Michigan, on Kerry Collins' 16-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Engram with 2:53 left. Penn State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) extended its winning streak to 11 games, second in the nation to Auburn. Michigan dropped to 4-2, 2-1 in the Big 10.

No. 2 Nebraska 17, No. 16 Kansas State 6. Nebraska dropped one spot to No. 3 despite beating Kansas State for the 26th straight time, 17-6. Injuries to the Cornhuskers' top two quarterbacks reduced Nebraska to third-stringer Matt Turman. He spent most of the first half handing off to Lawrence Phillips, who ran for 126 yards and one touchdown. Nebraska (7-0, 2-0 Big Eight) sent host Kansas State (4-1, 1-1) to its first loss.

No. 4 Colorado 45, No. 22 Oklahoma 7. Colorado moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 with its fourth win over a Top-25 opponent this season, a 45-7 victory over Oklahoma. Rashaan Salaam ran for 161 yards and four first-half touchdowns as the Buffaloes (6-0, 2-0 Big Eight) won their 10th straight.

Brigham Young 21, No. 17 Notre Dame 14. The Cougars sent the Fighting Irish (4-3) to their worst start since 1986, when Lou Holtz was 5-6 in his first season in South Bend.

John Walsh passed for 216 yards for Brigham Young (5-1), which twice stopped the Irish inside its 10. Notre Dame quarterback Ron Powlus was injured late in the game.
