Pamyat Charged

The anti-Semitic, Russian nationalist group Pamyat will face criminal charges for storming the editorial offices of the newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets this week, a Moscow prosecutor said Thursday.

President Boris Yeltsin earlier condemned the attack and asked the Interior and Security Ministries to punish the attackers, Interfax reported.

"As guarantor of the Constitution", said Vyacheslav Kostikov, the president's press secretary, Yeltsin "will not tolerate any threats in relation to the free Russian press".

During Tuesday's incident, 25 Pamyat members dressed in black paramilitary uniforms detained the newspaper's security guard and barged into the morning editorial meeting.

The group demanded that Moskovsky Komsomolets release names of reporters that had written about Pamyat. Two of the invaders videotaped and photographed the incident.

Pamyat faces charges of violating racial equality, curtailing journalistic activities and creating public disorder.
