Not Dead Yet: 49ers Stun Cowboys With 38-20 Win

IRVING, Texas -- The eyes of Texas blinked in disbelief when the pedestal beneath the powerful Dallas Cowboys was crushed by one of football's natural phenomenons.

Perhaps you remember the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers stunned the NFC-best Cowboys 38-20, with 49er quarterback Steve Young sidelined because of a sore shoulder, and fullback William Floyd out for the season after knee surgery, and a makeshift offensive line charged with protecting quarterback Elvis Grbac.

That's defending champion 49ers, even with a 6-4 record. And don't you forget it.

The 8-2 Cowboys did, and were bloodied.

"To stand there and throw dirt on us before we were dead and buried was not right," 49er linebacker Gary Plummer said. "Everybody has spent all week basking in the glory of the demise of the 49ers. The statement we made today was, there is no demise."

Patriots 34, Dolphins 17. In Miami, Dan Marino threw for 333 yards and broke Fran Tarkenton's record, but New England (4-6) still got its first win at Joe Robbie Stadium since 1988. Patriots rookie Curtis Martin rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns and Drew Bledsoe had two TD passes.

Marino has thrown for 47,299 yards in 13 seasons. Tarkenton threw for 47,003 yards in 18 years.

Eagles 31, Broncos 13. In Philadelphia, Rodney Peete (25 of 37 for 264 yards) ran for one score and passed for another, while Ricky Watters had two short TD runs as the Eagles pulled within two games of Dallas in the NFC East. The Broncos are 5-5.

Chiefs 22, Chargers 7. In San Diego, the Chiefs (9-1), behind Steve Bono and Marcus Allen, now have the NFL's best record to themselves. Allen scored from a yard out with 6:16 to play, while Bono was 17 of 27 for 137 yards and ran for a TD.

Saints 17, Colts 14. In New Orleans, Jim Everett threw for 228 yards and two TDs as the Saints (4-6) won for the fourth time in their last five games after an 0-5 start.

Raiders 17, Giants 13. In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Jeff Hostetler withstood 35 mph winds in leading Oakland (8-2) past his former teammates. Harvey Williams capped a long against-the-wind drive with a 6-yard TD run with 6:52 left.

Bills 23, Falcons 17. In Orchard Park, New York, Buffalo (7-3) took over first place in the AFC East in coach Marv Levy's first game back since undergoing cancer treatment. (LAT, AP)
