No Peace Yet for Angola

LUANDA () -- Angolan government troops and UNITA rebels were battling west of the guerrilla stronghold of Huambo on Friday, disregarding a peace accord initialed this week, aid sources said.

The central highlands city had not been yet attacked, the sources said, but they said people were fleeing or taking cover in bomb shelters.

The peace accord, which was signed in Lusaka, Zambia, this week, was aimed at ending 19 years of civil war in the former Portuguese colony.

But a cease-fire is not due to take effect until the agreement is signed by Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos and UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi on Nov. 15. Diplomats have said they expected the combatants to try to grab more territory first.
