NFL Places New Teams

CHICAGO () -- National Football League owners failed to agree on a realignment plan, leaving Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to assign expansion teams to their respective divisions for inaugural campaigns next season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will compete in the American Conference Central Division, and the Carolina Panthers will play in the National Conference Western Division, the commissioner announced Wednesday.

Tagliabue had suggested setting up new divisions in the NFL based on geographic rivalries. But none of the various options received enough support and Tagliabue assigned the new teams to the only four-team divisions left in the league.
