NATO Slammed as 'Egoistic'

Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev said Thursday that NATO's plans to admit Russia's former Warsaw Pact allies were "thoughtless" and "egoistic."

His remarks followed the announcement that U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry will visit Moscow next Thursday for high-level talks on issues including NATO expansion.

Kozyrev said, "I am not saying NATO is hostile to us. But we are outside it. We are different while the alliance is still the same." He called NATO's expansion "egoism and unwillingness to adapt to a new situation."

Also Thursday, Polish President Lech Walesa renewed his push for Polish membership in NATO, calling Russian concerns misguided.
