The Lomonosov Moscow State University is one of the top five educational institutions in the BRICS countries, according to QS University Rankings released Wednesday.

The university, also known as MSU, placed fourth on this year's QS University Rankings: BRICS list, slipping from the third place it occupied on the 2014 list.

British company Quacquarelli Symonds ranked 200 universities in the five BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa on eight indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, and the number of international students.

Other Russian universities that featured high up on this year's list included the St. Petersburg State University, which came in 15th place, followed by Novosibirsk State University (19th), and Bauman Moscow State Technical University (35th).

Also in the top 50 were the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, or MGIMO, the Tomsk State University, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Topping the list were China's Tsinghua, Peking and Fudan universities, while the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore placed in fifth spot.
