MOSCOW () -- The number of people applying for Russia's meager unemployment benefits rose more than 40 percent in the past year, the Federal Employment Service said Monday.

Total unemployment figures have risen less sharply: The State Statistics Committee said 8.2 percent of the working population was unemployed, compared with 7.1 percent a year ago.
