Mir Tests Successfully

MOSCOW () -- Three cosmonauts Wednesday successfully tested the troublesome automatic docking system aboard Russia's ageing Mir space station, which had failed on two previous attempts, Itar-Tass said.

The crew detached a spacecraft from Mir and re-docked in 35 minutes.

Moscow NTV commercial television said Tuesday the experiment was risky.

"There is a certain degree of risk but everything has been calculated," Mir commander Yury Malenchenko told NTV. "Walking in the streets of Moscow is far more dangerous."
