Letter Bombers Strike Austria

VIENNA -- Three letter bombs exploded in Austria on Monday, injuring two people, in a fresh wave of attacks against foreigners or figures associated with immigrants and refugees.

The bombs appeared to be timed to coincide with the appearance of two prominent witnesses for the prosecution -- ex-Vienna mayor Helmut Zilk and the leader of Austria's Green Party Madeleine Petrovic -- at the trial of neo-Nazis charged with previous letter bomb attacks, which began in December 1993.

Police said an Iranian doctor suffered serious injuries to his right hand when a letter bomb went off in his office in the town of Stronsdorf in Lower Austria. Human rights activist Maria Loley sustained injuries to both hands in the town of Poysdorf, also in Lower Austria. A third blast was reported in Poysdorf, but there was no report of injuries.
