Lawyer's Appeal Denied

ST. PETERSBURG () -- A district court denied appeals Monday to release lawyer Dmitry Yakubovsky from jail while he awaits trial for his alleged participation in a heist of valuable manuscripts from the National Public Library last December.

"The court seems to have found that there is reason to believe that, if he is not cleared of guilt following the investigation, Yakubovsky will try to hide," said defense attorney Alexei Pavlov, announcing the decision of Judge Galina Protsenko.

Trial proceedings are not expected to begin until early spring. Yakubovsky's lawyers said they planned to appeal the decision to the city court.
