Law Chief Eyes Mavrodi

MOSCOW () Prosecutor General Alexei Ilyushenko has asked the State Duma for permission to press charges against Duma deputy Sergei Mavrodi, a spokesman at the prosecutor's office said Tuesday.

Mavrodi, president of the scandal-ridden MMM investment company, is suspected of tax evasion on undeclared profits and hindering an inspection by the tax police, Alexander Zvyagintsev said. The reputed pyramid scheme stopped trading last July when the price of its shares collapsed.

Reluctant to admit such a notorious figure into the legislature, the Duma stalled for 11 weeks before accepting Mavrodi's election as a deputy from Khimki last November. Now the Duma must decide, in view of the evidence presented by the prosecutor general, whether to waive his immunity from prosecution, Zvyagintsev said.
