Knicks Winning Streak Brings Hornets to Defeat

NEW YORK -- Charles Oakley, a doubtful starter because of a knee sprain, had 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Knicks, who also got a big boost from reserves in winning their 14th straight victory, this one over the Charlotte Hornets, 106-95.

The streak is the Knicks' longest since a team-record 18 straight in 1969-70. The reserves, led by Anthony Mason's 17 points, outscored the Hornets' backups 45-17.

Lakers 91, Timberwolves 89. In Inglewood, California, Magic Johnson is 2-0 as coach of the Lakers, but it was close and not particularly pretty. With the score tied, Nick Van Exel held the ball until the clock ticked down to a few seconds, then drove the lane and made a layup under the outstretched arms of Minnesota's Christian Laettner.

Pistons 123, Heat 115. In Miami, Sean Elliott scored eight of his 16 points in the final 3:06 as Detroit held off Miami.

Hawks 101, Nets 98. In Atlanta, Kevin Willis and Duane Ferrell scored six points apiece in the final 4:08 for the Hawks, who won for the sixth time in seven games and have the league's best home record at 31-5.

Spurs 117, Mavericks 92. In Dallas, David Robinson dominated inside with 37 points, 22 in the first half, as San Antonio handed the Mavericks their 15th consecutive defeat. Robinson moved past Orlando's O'Neal into the NBA scoring lead with a 29.2 average.

Bulls 106, 76ers 103. In Chicago, Scottie Pippen scored 27 points and the three-time defending NBA champion Bulls clinched a playoff spot.

Sonics 114, Blazers 100. In Portland, Oregon, Shawn Kemp scored 16 points for Seattle in the third quarter and the SuperSonics used a balanced attack to post their sixth straight victory.
