Kim Jong-il Appears

TOKYO () -- North Korea's unanointed leader Kim Jong-il made a rare public appearance at a military parade Tuesday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the communist state's ruling party.

The parade kicked off with Kim Jong-il receiving a report from newly appointed defense minister Choe Kwang, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

"[Kim] raised his hand to return a salute to all the paraders," said the agency. Later, Kim watched gymnastic games staged in Pyongyang by North Korean boys, Radio Pyongyang said.

The 53-year-old Kim, who is supreme commander of North Korea's 1.1-million-strong military, has yet to be formally confirmed in the two posts his father held -- general secretary of the ruling Workers' Party and state president.
