Kiev: Poor but Hopeful

KIEV () -- Nine out of 10 Ukrainians are dissatisfied with life in the former Soviet republic, and two thirds say their families are too poor to buy enough food, says a poll conducted by a U.S.-based group.

But two out of three people said they expected improvements in Ukraine in the near future, and nearly 60 percent said they believed in reform-oriented President Leonid Kuchma, said the poll.

"If you're Kuchma there's a lot of potential here," said a member of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems.
