Khrushchev Park Closes

Khrushchevland, a theme park that captured the peculiarities of Soviet life under Nikita Khrushchev, has closed its doors only one week after it opened in September.

Anatoly Chechik, the creator and manager of the park, said that shoddy workmanship and petty thievery had cost him 100, 000 rubles a day.

Khrushchevland is located in VDNKh, the sprawling Exhibition of Economic Achievements at the end of Prospekt Mira. Chechik said the park did not construct an adequate fence around the property, enabling visitors to slip in for free instead of paying the 250-ruble fee.

The theme park was meant to evoke life under Khrushchev, leader of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964, through live doubles, cultural performances and satirically designed sets.
