Kazakh Leader Wins Poll

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Supporters of President Nursultan Nazarbayev won a clear majority of seats in Kazakhstan's controversial parliamentary elections, according to official results released Thursday.

Only 23 deputies to the new 177-seat parliament will be from parties which oppose at least some of Nazarbayev's policies. Self-nominated candidates, most of whom support the president, won 60 seats, and the Union of People's Unity of Kazakhstan, which is directly sponsored by the president, took 30.

Another 42 deputies are directly appointed by the president.

"All 177 candidates have been chosen," the chairman of the central electoral commission, Karatai Turisov, told a news conference.

He said another official organization, the Federal Trade Unions, was second to the Union of People's Unity, with 11 seats. The political affiliation of a further 11 deputies was unclear.

The new parliament, replacing a 360-seat body left over from Soviet times, is expected to start work on key foreign investment and tax laws in April.
