kasparov Takes Money

NEW YORK -- Garry Kasparov of Russia won $900,000 in the Professional Chess Association world championship against Viswanathan Anand of India when the players agreed to a draw after only 12 moves and 15 minutes of the 18th game.

Kasparov, 32, won the match outright and the lion's share of the purse with Tuesday's draw. He had already defended his title in Monday's drawn 17th game by clinching at least a tie and an even split of the purse in the best-of-20-game contest. Anand won $500,000.

The remaining two scheduled games in the series atop the World Trade Center will not now be played.
