Jail Riot in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG -- A manhunt was underway in South Africa for 87 prisoners who escaped during a protest to reduce sentences, but authorities said the situation was mostly under control. Jail violence continued at the weekend and 87 prisoners were still at large Monday after escaping Modderbee prison east of Johannesburg on Friday morning. Rioting in at least 10 prisons by common-law prisoners demanding amnesties began Thursday in one of the biggest challenges yet to the black-led government of President Nelson Mandela which came to power after the country's first all-race elections in April. At least four prisoners were killed in the unrest.
