Besides Gaudenzi's victory, Australian wild-card entry Pat Cash upset No. 5 seed Thomas Muster of Austria 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to enter the second round, and 232nd ranked Kent Kinear from the United States eliminated Russia's Alexander Volkov 7-6 (7-3), 7-6, 6-1.
