Irish Elect Party Head

DUBLIN () -- Ireland's straight-talking finance minister has been elected leader of the country's largest political party, Fianna Fail, putting him in a strong position to be prime minister.

Bertie Ahern replaces Albert Reynolds, who resigned Thursday. Ahern now faces the task of winning back Fianna Fail's former Labour coalition partners, who left the government in protest over a senior judicial appointment, sparking Reynolds' resignation.

Parliament is due to vote Tuesday on the formation of a new government.

Ahern, who has had little involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process so far, said the issue would now be at the top of his agenda.
