NEW YORK () -- The president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, Rene Fasel, has backed off an earlier edict to members instructing them not to sign locked out NHL players. Over the weekend, both the Swedish and Finnish federations were threatening to sue. Earlier, the NHL decided not to prevent players from playing in Europe.
In Helsinki, Finland, Los Angeles King forward Jari Kurri and Winnipeg Jet right wing Teemu Selanne practiced Monday for 90 minutes with their new team, Jokerit, in the Finnish League. "The situation in the NHL gets to you, and playing here calms me down and takes the thoughts away from the problems," said Kurri.
Meanwhile, the numbers continued to mount in the postponed NHL season, with seemingly no quick solution in sight to the labor dispute between the league and its players. Seventeen days and 93 games had been lost through Monday. No new negotiations have been scheduled, NHL spokesman Arthur Pincus said.
