MOSCOW -- A Russian military helicopter with 18 aboard has disappeared inside the Arctic Circle and the border forces on Friday stepped up a high-level search and rescue mission.
Russian Border Forces commander Andrei Nikolayev will cut short an official visit to the United States to coordinate the search for the Mi-26 helicopter, which disappeared Thursday, Itar-Tass quoted the border forces as saying.
The helicopter, operated by the Russian Arctic border force, last made contact while flying over an island in the Karskoye Sea in the direction of Sredny Island, an Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman said by telephone.
