Grenade Error Kills 8

KHABAROVSK, Far East () -- Eight people were killed when grenades accidentally exploded as they were being disarmed by explosives experts, an Interior Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

Spokesman Vasily Panchenkov said the accident happened Wednesday as specialists were disarming some 200 obsolete stun grenades at a weapons testing ground near the city of Khabarovsk.

"The accident was caused by a sapper's error," Panchenkov said. "The sappers just broke the rules of security. Everyone was burned alive."

A criminal investigation is underway.
