Gore Speaks to Adams

WASHINGTON () -- A telephone call from U.S. Vice President Al Gore to Irish nationalist leader Gerry Adams ended the 20-year ban on official U.S. contacts with the political wing of the Irish Republican Army.

The Sinn Fein leader is in the United States for a two-week, nine-city tour to rally support for the peace process in Northern Ireland.

President Bill Clinton's decision to lift the ban Monday was a reward for Sinn Fein's support of the IRA cease-fire. But the White House has made it known Adams will not be meeting the president during his three-day Washington visit.

Adams spent Monday talking with Congressional leaders and members of both political parties and was set Tuesday to make his first visit to the State Department and address the Council on Foreign Relations and National Press Club.
