Gonzalez off EU Ballot

BONN -- German Chancellor Helmut Kohl publicly crossed Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez off the list for European Commission president Tuesday. Kohl, whose country now holds the six-monthly EU presidency, said Gonzalez had made it clear he was not available for the post. Speaking after the EU Commission and the German cabinet met jointly in Bonn, he also said he did not think Delors would stay on after his term finishes at the end of this year. The 12-nation EU has been plunged into crisis by its failure to agree on a successor to Delors for the key post. Britain blocked the appointment of Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene at an EU summit in Corfu last month.
