Gold Smugglers Held

MOSCOW () -- Police arrested a couple employed at a gold mine in the Russian Far East after airport officials found 12 kilograms of gold in cans of meat in their luggage, a news agency said.


The suspects were about to leave the city of Pevek on a flight to Moscow, 5,800 kilometers away, when they were intercepted Tuesday, Interfax said.


The dispatch said the gold was concealed in seven cans of meat in their luggage. It said the gold was worth about $172,000.
