Germany Volunteers

BONN () -- Chancellor Helmut Kohl's coalition decided Friday to intensify German military involvement in former Yugoslavia if asked by NATO, softening a reluctance born of Nazi atrocities five decades ago.

The coalition left open the possibility that German Tornado fighter-bombers will be sent on radar-jamming missions over Bosnia if NATO is called on to evacuate United Nations peacekeepers there.

Up to 3,000 medics and supply troops may also be ordered to Croatia as part of a NATO force if the UN troops are withdrawn.
