Germans Pay Out To Victims of War

The German government has given Russia 180,000 Deutsche marks ($284,760) to be distributed as compensation to Russians imprisoned in Nazi Germany during World War II, a government official said Thursday.

Valery Vorontsov, spokesman for the Deputy Prime Minister for Social Security Yury Yarov, said ex-prisoners would get grants of 100 to 400 marks, depending the length of their imprisonment.

The money, while small in value, is symbolic. Many Soviet citizens returning to Stalin's regime from wartime imprisonment were executed or jailed.
