Georgia in Partnership

Georgia became the 13th country of the former Soviet bloc to sign NATO's Partnership for Peace agreement Wednesday, and NATO Secretary General Manfred W?rner said Russia should do likewise next month.

Georgian Foreign Minister Alexander Chikvaidze signed the agreement, which provides for joint exercises, training and cooperation in areas such as defense planning, at NATO headquarters.

Chikvaidze, whose country has been ravaged by civil war pitting government forces against separatists in the Abkhazian region, said it was a historic day and that NATO could help Georgia "to avoid mistakes in future."

Asked when Russia would sign the agreement, W?rner said Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev would probably do this "towards the end of April."
