GATT School Begins

GENEVA () -- Trade officials from Russia and Ukraine on Monday began a special training course organized by the GATT trade watchdog to help them formulate policies for their transition economies.

The five-week course, which has been funded largely by the United States, is being attended by 24 senior figures from finance, foreign trade and agriculture ministries.

GATT said the course would cover international trade theory and the workings of the GATT and the World Trade Organization. It would put special emphasis on trade policy issues of interest to countries switching from state-run to market economies.

Both Russia and Ukraine have applied to join the 123-member General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, due to be absorbed into a new WTO next year.
