Father Leads Police to Suspected Cop Killer

Police on Tuesday arrested a Dagestani suspect wanted in connection with the weekend killing of a police officer in western Moscow after receiving a tip from his father.

Yakub Kartakayev, 27, admitted to shooting police officer Denis Klimovich and critically injuring police officer Konstantin Bykov after they stopped his black BMW on Polotskaya Ulitsa at 12:25 a.m. Saturday, RIA-Novosti reported, citing the police.

Kartakayev has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, and illegal weapons possession, which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

Kartakayev was detained early Tuesday in Tuchkovo, a town 80 kilometers west of Moscow, the statement said.

Police received a tip about Kartakayev’s whereabouts from his father, RIA-Novosti said, without elaborating.

Investigators also detained two people suspected of hiding Kartakayev, RIA-Novosti said. The two could face up to two years in prison if charged and convicted of sheltering a suspect.

Police initiated a manhunt for Kartakayev after finding his passport near the scene of the shooting. Kartakayev sustained minor injuries in the incident and fled the BMW on foot, news reports said. Police had stopped the BMW because it had no license plates.

Police on Tuesday were looking for two other people who were also riding in the BMW.

The police officers who detained Kartakayev will receive medals, RIA-Novosti said.
