Ethnic Influx Assessed

MOSCOW () -- Russian authorities expect an influx of 2 million to 6 million ethnic Russians from former Soviet republics by the year 2000, Itar-Tass reported Friday.

The agency quoted Tatyana Regent, head of the Federal Migration Service, as saying the broadness of the forecast is a function of uncertainty over whether ethnic relations will worsen or improve in the former republics.

Some 2.1 million people, most of them ethnic Russians from the Caucasus and Central Asia, have migrated to Russia in recent years, fleeing ethnic wars and poverty. About 600,000 have received refugee status, which allows them to qualify for government help, Regent said.
