ROME -- In a last attempt to save his career, Dutch soccer star Marco Van Basten had surgery on his right ankle.
His team, AC Milan, said that cartilage damaged in past injuries was reconstructed Monday and a temporary external metal plate and pin support were applied to aid healing.
The operation is Van Basten's third. His ankle problem has kept him on the sidelines as his team won the Italian major league championship this season
