Duma Rejects Charges

MOSCOW () -- The local Duma in the Far East city of Vladivostok rejected the allegations of a government commission investigating malpractice in the region, Russian television reported Wednesday.

The Duma voted instead to set up an independent commission and decided to debate a motion of no confidence in its speaker, Igor Lebedinets, who invited the commission to Vladivostok.

The formation of the commission by First Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais has been seen as an attempt to curb the powerful local governor of the region, Yevgeny Nazdratenko.
