Drown in Moscow

MOSCOW () -- During the recent 12-day heat wave, 56 people drowned in Moscow ponds and lakes, 47 of them in the first week alone, a Moscow Society of Life Guards official said Thursday.

Nikolai Shamayev, chairman of Moscow's lifeguards, said that most of the drownings between July 12 and 24 were linked to alcohol. But he said the figure was unprecedented over such a short period.

"This is a grievous record for Moscow," he said. "We recorded only 167 cases in the whole of 1993."
