Derailment Caused by Mine

xA passenger-train derailment on the Transiberian railway was probably caused by a mine placed on the tracks, officials said on Friday.

Eight passenger cars and a dining car went off the tracks Thursday night near the city of Chita, 5,600 kilometers southeast of Moscow, Itar-Tass said. No casualties were reported.

The engineer heard a loud click and saw a bright flash next to a rail junction just before the locomotive and the cars went off the tracks, the news agency said.

It quoted officials at the Emergency Situations Ministry as saying the derailment was due to "a mine planted on the railway by criminals."

The accident disrupted traffic on the rail line between Moscow and the Far East. Normal traffic was expected to be restored by Friday night, Itar-Tass said.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
