BRUSSELS () -- The United States' push to expand the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to the east was a mistake, European Commission President Jacques Delors said Wednesday.
"I think it was a premature initiative which was badly timed," he told a news conference ahead of the European Union's two-day summit in the German city of Essen.
"If I had had something to say in the matter I wouldn't have advised the United States to advocate enlargement of the Atlantic alliance," he said, adding that it had split the allies, angered the Russians and did nothing to help security.
