Deal for Haiti Refugees

WASHINGTON () -- Haitian refugees intercepted at sea and now living at the U.S. Navy Base at Guantanamo, Cuba, and who agree by Jan. 5 to be repatriated, will receive a cash bonus of $80 plus job opportunities.

Those who refuse to sign up will be required to return to Haiti in any case, but they will not be eligible for benefits, the State Department said Thursday.

The new offer is five times higher than previous grant offered by the United States.

More than 4,400 Haitians remain at the base and many have declined repatriation because they are hopeful of being allowed to resettle in the United States.
