Dagestan Quarantine

MOSCOW ( -- Russia's southern region of Dagestan has halted dozens of buses and cut air and rail services to prevent the spread of a cholera epidemic, Itar-Tass said Wednesday.


The news agency said 44 settlements had reported cases of cholera, which usually spreads through contaminated water and food and can be fatal if not treated promptly.


"A real threat of a cholera epidemic is emerging in Dagestan," the agency said, quoting the local government.


Russian officials said Tuesday six people had died from cholera in Dagestan and 205 people were infected.
