NEW YORK -- The Dallas Cowboys didn't get caught looking ahead to San Francisco. In fact, the New York Giants caught them in a fighting mood. Emmitt Smith rushed for 163 yards and scored twice, and Troy Aikman threw a touchdown pass and ran for another Monday night as the Cowboys won 38-10 at home against the New York Giants.


The two-time Super Bowl champions improved to 8-1, best in the NFL, with their 12th straight victory over an NFC East opponent.


On the down side, wide receiver Alvin Harper sprained his left knee just before the teams scuffled heading to the locker rooms for halftime, and could be out for the season.


Dallas plays at San Francisco (7-2) next Sunday in an important game for playoff home-field advantage. But the Cowboys weren't thinking about San Francisco as they handed the Giants (3-6) their sixth consecutive loss. It was the first time the Giants had lost six straight games since 1980 under Ray Perkins.


Aikman and Smith took the Cowboys 95 yards in 10 plays for a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. Dallas traveled 80 yards in 13 plays for a second touchdown in the second quarter, while in the third period, with Smith scoring on a one-yard run after a 36-yard pass from Aikman to Michael Irvin. Overall, Smith rushed a franchise-high 35 times.

49ers 37, Redskins 22. San Francisco hosts Dallas on Sunday at Candlestick Park. At Washington, the 49ers struck in almost every way, with Dexter Carter scoring on a 96-yard kickoff return, Tim McDonald on a 73-yard interception return, and Jerry Rice on a 28-yard reverse. In the first half, Steve Young (15-for-25 for 291 yards) hit Brent Jones for a 69-yard score and ran a yard for another TD for San Francisco (7-2).


The Redskins (2-8) are winless in six games at RFK, their worst start at home since 1961. Gus Frerotte was 15-of-32 for 167 yards and two interceptions.


Dolphins 22, Colts 21. At Miami, Dan Marino marched the Dolphins 41 yards in eight plays to set up Pete Stoyanovich's 34-yard field goal with four seconds left that gave Miami a 22-21 win over the Indianapolis Colts.


A 28-yard interception return for a score by Ray Buchanan had given the Colts (4-6) a 21-12 fourth-quarter lead.


Marino completed 30 of 41 passes and rallied the Dolphins to 16 fourth-quarter points.


Eagles 17, Cardinals 7. At Philadelphia, Randall Cunningham threw two long TD passes to Fred Barnett in the third quarter as the Eagles spoiled Buddy Ryan's return to the Vet. The Eagles' defense produced two turnovers and five sacks against Arizona (3-6). Ryan was greeted by boos as he came onto the field . Barnett's scoring passes were 47 and 50 yards as he caught a career-best 11 passes for 173 yards.


Vikings 21, Saints 20. At Minneapolis, Warren Moon hit Qadry Ismail with an 11-yard scoring pass with five seconds left to lift the Vikings over the New Orleans Saints 21-20. Moon completed 33 of a career-high 57 attempts for 420 yards and three touchdowns.


Bengals 20, Seahawks 17. In Seattle, the Cincinnati Bengals won for the first time this season when Jeff Blake completed a 76-yard pass to Darnay Scott to set up Doug Pelfrey's sixth field goal for a 20-17 win against the Seahawks.


Jets 22, Bills 17. At New York, Boomer Esiason threw two touchdown passes, including the 200th of his NFL career, as the Jets took their first series sweep of Buffalo since 1986, 22-17.


Falcons 10, Chargers 9. In Atlanta, Jeff George hit Terance Mathis with a nine-yard touchdown pass on the game's first drive, and Norm Johnson kicked a 23-yard field goal for a 10-9 win over the San Diego Chargers.


Bears 30, Buccaneers 6. At Tampa Bay, Florida, Steve Walsh won his fourth consecutive start as the Chicago Bears used a pair of second-half touchdown drives to beat the Buccaneers 20-6.


Packers 38, Lions 30. At Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Brett Favre had three TD passes in the second quarter as Green Bay (5-4) built a 24-point lead and held off a Dave Krieg-led comeback. Barry Sanders was held to 47 yards on 15 carries, while Mel Gray returned a kickoff 91 yards for a TD.


Chiefs 13, Raiders 3. At Kansas City, Missouri, Derrick Walker turned a short pass from Joe Montana into a 57-yard reception, producing the only touchdown in Kansas City's plodding victory.


Rams 27, Broncos 21. At Anaheim, California, Chris Chandler threw two TD passes that helped Los Angeles to a 21-point lead, holding off a fourth-quarter comeback by John Elway.


Browns 13, Patriots 6. At Cleveland, Ohio, Leroy Hoard ran for 123 yards and scored on a one-yard pass from Mark Rypien as the Browns (7-2) are off to their best start since 1965.


Drew Bledsoe threw for 166 yards, and was intercepted four times in wind gusts of up to 40 mph.


Steelers 12, Oilers 9. At Houston, Gary Anderson kicked his fourth field goal of the game, a 40-yarder, with 3:36 remaining in overtime to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 12-9 win over the Oilers.
