Coup Attempt Foiled

BANJUL, Gambia () -- Gambia's young military rulers said Friday they had foiled an overnight coup attempt in this west African tourist destination, and a number of army officers had been killed in shooting.

Sana Sabally, the vice chairman of the governing Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council, which took power July 22, told a local commercial radio station there had been shooting at two barracks outside the capital.

Sabally, who blamed "a few officers of the Gambia National Army," said the shooting had been brought under control after about three hours.
