City Profiteers Fined

MOSCOW () -- City officials have slapped 175.5 million rubles ($58,000) in fines on stores across Moscow for excessive price hikes after the ruble's fluctuation last week, Interfax reported Friday.

Mayor Yury Luzhkov sent an army of inspectors into the city's stores to check whether shops which raised their prices after the ruble's record nose-dive lowered their prices when it recovered.

Prices for nearly all products and services were raised beyond limits the city deemed reasonable, Interfax quoted an official at the city Consumer Market and Services Department as saying.
