China's Jobless Rate Up

BEIJING () -- China's urban unemployment rate is expected to rise to 3.4 percent at the end of 1996 from 2.8 percent in September, the Economic Information Daily said Friday.

The number of people coming onto the job market in 1996 was estimated at 9.55 million, while state firms could lay off as many as 3.9 million, it said in a joint forecast with the State Information Center.

Foreign-funded firms and private companies were expected to take on 3.6 million and 5.3 million new workers respectively in 1996, it said.

During the 1996 to 2000 period, China will have to find jobs for 10 million new workers each year as well as for those laid off by companies trying to raise their efficiency through better technology, officials have said.
