China Set for GATT

MADRID () -- China could be readmitted to GATT in time to become a founder member of its successor, the World Trade Organization, in January, GATT director-general Peter Sutherland said Monday.

But it would take much longer for Russia's application to be processed, he told a news conference in Madrid.

Admission requires consensus among of all 125 GATT members and the United States has been demanding that China reshape its once-rigid state economy more radically.

Referring to Russia's application for membership, Sutherland said the large number of queries from member states meant "it can't at all be envisaged that this process could be concluded in anything like the time frame that we're talking of with regard to China."
