Chechen Clash Intensifies

Opponents and supporters of Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev have clashed in the breakaway southern region using armored vehicles to inflict heavy casualties on both sides, Interfax reported. Fighting first broke out Sunday, By Monday morning, a full-fledged battle was underway in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, and Interfax reported many casualties on both sides as well as among civilians. Dudayev, a former general in the Soviet air force, was elected president in 1991 and declared the independence of the tiny, mountainous region in southern Russia.
