BEIJING () -- Cuban President Fidel Castro, in China for an official visit, on Thursday hailed China's economic successes as a model for his vision of "socialism with Cuban characteristics."
The phrase, coined in talks with President and Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin, was a flattering twist on leader Deng Xiaoping's vaunted "socialism with Chinese characteristics", the basis of China's market reforms.
Deng has used the phrase to embrace private ownership and other pillars of capitalism as acceptable components of Chinese socialism.
