Carter Must Stay in Jail

MOSCOW () -- David Carter, the former St. Petersburg businessman charged with bank fraud, has been ordered by a Cyprus judge to remain in jail for at least 15 days while authorities wait for extradition papers from the United States, Carter's lawyer said Monday.

"According to the extradition treaty, there is no limit to how long he can be held in jail," said Yiannos Georgiades, Carter's attorney, in a telephone interview from Nicosia, Cyprus. He added that he planned to appeal the district court's Friday decision to Cyprus' supreme court.
